A landscape forever altered by the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, surreal, ash-filled, and unlike anywhere else on earth.
The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes offers the chance to walk a landscape forever altered by the 1912 Novarupta eruption, the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, its effects felt worldwide.
From the vent at Novarupta, a towering column of ash, a plinian eruption column, jetted skyward with little interruption for 60 hours. It filled the valley with ash flows and fed an umbrella cloud more than 1,000 miles wide that shrouded most of southern Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
The Valley is a full-day excursion and a genuine bucket-list stop for anyone already coming for the bears. It's included in your stay as one of your daily choices, at no extra cost. The tour itself is run by one of the park concessionaires, and we coordinate the whole thing for you. Just tell us you're interested when you book.
Send your dates and we'll help you fit the Valley of 10,000 Smokes around your bear-viewing days.
